Ozempic Weight-loss drugs to Slow Down Ageing Process, scientists suggest

Drugs for weight loss have the potential to completely transform healthcare by delaying the aging process and extending life expectancy and quality of life. Leading scientists have made this stark statement in response to research that were presented at the European Society of Cardiology Conference in London last week.

Studies have already shown that semaglutide, which is marketed under the names Ozempic and Wegovy, lowers the risk of death in patients with cardiovascular disease who are overweight or obese.

However, more recent research has shown that Ozempic has effects that go beyond what was once thought to be possible for the medication. Researchers found that those who took the medication died at a decreased rate from all causes, not just cardiovascular ones.

"Semaglutide has far-reaching benefits beyond what we initially imagined," Yale School of Medicine Professor Harlan Krumholz stated. It goes beyond just preventing heart attacks. They are advocates for health. The idea that enhancing people's health in this way truly slows down aging doesn't surprise me.

The US Select trial, which examined 17,604 overweight or obese adults 45 years of age or older with established cardiovascular disease but no diabetes, provided the data for the research. They were monitored for almost three years after receiving either semaglutide or a placebo.

Throughout the course of the trial, 833 people passed away; of these, 58% had heart-related causes of death and 42% had other causes; infections were the most common in the latter group. Importantly, semaglutide was found to consistently lower the risk of unfavorable cardiovascular events and to significantly lower the chance of infection-related deaths compared to those in the placebo group.

Lead author of one of the studies and Harvard professor Benjamin Scirica remarked, "The robust reduction in non-cardiovascular death, and particularly infections deaths, was surprising." "These results confirm that obesity and overweight raise mortality risk because of various etiologies that can be treated with medications such as semaglutide." See Here
