Tiger escapes Mexico zoo near Texas border still remains on the loose.
According to KGBT-TV, the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office announced on Wednesday that a male Bengal tiger had escaped the Quinta La Fauna zoo in the Mexican border city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas. This raised concerns that the cat might have made its way into Texas. The Reynosa Department of Public Security posted on Facebook on Saturday, stating that although attempts have been made, the at-large tiger has been visualised but not neutralised. The zoo has been closed since September 4th. The department earlier released a picture of the tiger but did not provide an explanation for how it got out.
After the tiger escaped, Reynosa Mayor Carlos Peña Ortiz collaborated with authorities to organise multiple locations for the animal's location, according to the agency. The agency reported that on Saturday, workers found his tracks and excrement... Presumably, the animal poses a risk to other people. Officers in charge of public safety are still telling people not to approach or "try to catch it" in order to protect themselves. It is recommended that anyone who sees the tiger dial 911.
According to KRGV-TV, Reynosa Environmental Protection Director Aarón de la Cruz stated that attempts on Saturday to shoot the tiger with a neutralising dart were unsuccessful... It eventually raced off and hid amid many trees after following the tiger, De la Cruz told KRGV-TV. Also, the director posted a picture of it hidden under multiple trees.
According to Houston publication Chron, the tiger appears to be the same one that Tony, who was brought to the zoo in July, is named. Chron claims Tony has murdered hens and piglets in the area and left paw prints for rescuers to follow. Sunday, in an attempt to apprehend him without harming anyone, crews set up motion detection cameras, bait, and trap cages throughout the region.
