Sean ‘Diddy' Combs was arrested in New York
According to his lawyer, federal investigators in New York City on Monday detained hip-hop mogul and three-time Grammy winner Sean "Diddy" Combs. The arrest was made in Manhattan on Monday by agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), according to people familiar with the situation who spoke with NBC New York. Combs was taken into custody in a hotel lobby, an official told NBC News. The entertainment star is "an imperfect person but is not criminal," according to Combs' lawyer Marc Agnifilo, who expressed disappointment at the decision to pursue "what we believe is an unjust prosecution" in a statement issued late on Monday night.
The accusations Combs would face were not immediately clear, although Agnifilo stated that the charges originated from the U.S. Attorney's Office, suggesting that federal charges would be brought. "Mr. Combs has willingly moved to New York last week in anticipation of these allegations, and he has been nothing but forthcoming with this investigation, to his credit. Kindly hold off on making decisions until you have all the information," Agnifilo said in their statement. "These are the acts of an innocent man with nothing to hide, and he looks forward to clearing his name in court."
Homeland Security Investigations spokespeople declined to comment. In a post on X, Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney Damian Williams revealed that "earlier this evening, federal agents arrested Sean Combs, based on a sealed indictment filed by the SDNY." Williams said that the indictment will likely be made public on Tuesday morning. Williams is scheduled to speak in a press conference on Tuesday starting at 11:30 a.m.
Combs is due in court in lower Manhattan on charges that seem to have to do with claims of sexual assault, sex trafficking, and the soliciting and distribution of illicit firearms and drugs. Since HSI carried out search warrants at Combs' houses at least in March 2024, the 54-year-old has been the subject of a federal investigation. Federal agents in Manhattan had reportedly spoken with three women and one male on the previously noted accusations against Combs, according to NBC News at the time of those searches.
The investigation headed by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York included those search warrants as well. Three law enforcement sources aware with the warrants claim that before Combs was set to leave for a trip to the Bahamas, HSI investigators took his phones from him in Miami. According to sources, Combs was in the Miami region when the searches were carried out by federal agents.
Bill Combs, a former music mogul, has expressed regret over a 2016 video that purportedly showed him assaulting Cassie Ventura, his girlfriend. Combs accepted full responsibility for the situation and acknowledged it. Combs was sued federally by Ventura, although he first refuted the claims. The settlement between the two was not disclosed. Meredith Firetog, Ventura's lawyer, chastised Combs for downplaying the incident and implying that his victims were looking for financial gain. Combs has consistently denied any misconduct and has not been charged with any. There are no criminal charges against the former music executive.
