Luis Suárez to retires from Uruguay’s national team at age 37


At the age of 37, veteran striker Luis Suárez declared his retirement from the Uruguay national team on Monday.

With 69 goals in 142 games, the former forward for Liverpool and Barcelona is Uruguay's all-time top scorer. His final international encounter is scheduled for this Friday against Paraguay.

"It is difficult to announce, but this Friday will be my final game with my nation's national team,"
a distraught Suárez stated during a press conference held at Centenario Stadium. That day, Uruguay plays host to Paraguay in a World Cup qualifying match.

After representing Uruguay since 2007, Suárez stated he thought the moment was right to quit.


Suárez competed for Uruguay in five Copa America events and four World Cups. 2011 saw him win the continental competition.

The striker intends to pursue a career at the club level and currently plays with his close buddy Lionel Messi at Inter Miami. The two collaborated while playing for Barcelona from 2014 to 2020. In addition, Suárez was a player for Gremio, Ajax, Liverpool, and Atletico Madrid.
