Tulsi Gabbard, a 2020 Democratic contender, supports Trump against Harris

In a further move away from the party she ran for office four years ago, former Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard has endorsed Donald Trump's presidential campaign. She has also associated herself with the GOP nominee's criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris and the disorganized departure from the Afghanistan War.

Gabbard, a National Guard veteran who served two tours of duty in the Middle East before being elected to the U.S. House from Hawaii, said during Trump's Detroit appearance on Monday that the GOP nominee "understands the grave responsibility that a president and commander in chief bears for every single one of our lives."

On the third anniversary of the Aug. 26, 2021, suicide attack at Hamid Karzai International Airport, which claimed the lives of over 100 Afghans and 13 American service members, the two made an appearance at the National Guard Association of the United States. Trump and Gabbard visited Arlington National Cemetery earlier on Monday, when the former president lay wreaths in memory of Sgt. Nicole Gee, Staff Sgt. Darin Hoover, and Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss, three of the fallen service members.

"Having the courage to meet with adversaries, dictators, allies and partners alike in the pursuit of peace, seeing war as a last resort," was how Gabbard lauded Trump on Monday. Because the United States is "facing multiple wars on multiple fronts in regions around the world and closer to the brink of nuclear war than we have ever been before," she denounced the Democratic White House.

Later on Monday, the former president's team declared that Gabbard will serve as moderator for a town hall with Trump that the campaign was organizing to take place in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on Thursday.
Gabbard has consistently shown some degree of support for Trump, even throughout her Democratic tenure in the U.S. House. When Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in 2019 over his interactions with Ukraine, she was the sole member to vote "present."

During her four House tenure, Gabbard gained notoriety for adopting stances that were in opposition to the establishment of her own party. She gained popularity among progressives as an early and outspoken backer of Sen. Bernie Sanders' 2016 Democratic presidential primary campaign.

Instead of running for reelection in 2020, Gabbard decided to run for president. She claimed that both Republicans and Democrats shared responsibility for the destabilization of the Middle East, which also reduced American security and claimed thousands of lives. During a primary discussion, she relentlessly attacked Harris's record and eventually prevailed over her in the contest, which was eventually won by President Joe Biden.

After endorsing Biden, Gabbard became independent two years later, claiming that "woke" ideologues and a "elitist cabal of warmongers" controlled the Democratic Party. She has since launched a podcast, started a Fox News contributor account, and acted as a campaign manager for other well-known Republicans.

Not too long ago, Trump received the endorsement of another former Democratic presidential candidate. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent who faced Biden for the nomination as a Democrat in 2017 but withdrew from the race last week, declared his support for Trump in the general election.
