Ricky Pearsall of the 49ers was shot during a 'attempted robbery' in San Francisco

According to authorities, rookie Ricky Pearsall of the San Francisco 49ers was shot during a "attempted robbery" in Union Square.

According to a statement from the San Francisco 49ers, the 23-year-old "sustained a bullet wound to his chest and is in serious but stable condition."

Police responded to a shooting incident just before 4 p.m. local time and discovered two men "suffering from injuries," according to a statement from the San Francisco Police Department.
"During the attempted robbery, a physical altercation ensued, and both the suspect and victim were injured," according to the SFPD.

Sources told ABC News that preliminary evidence suggests the wide receiver was singled out because of a Rolex watch he was sporting.

Authorities said in a statement that the suspect is in custody and that charges are pending at this time.

The National Football League reports that Pearsall, a first-round draft selection, resumed practice this past week after recovering from a shoulder injury sustained during the preseason.

More update coming soon.
