Kimi Antonelli to be Lewis Hamilton’s replacement at Formula 1’s Mercedes

After his Formula One début ended in a collision, teenager Kimi Antonelli was announced as Lewis Hamilton's replacement at Mercedes for 2025.

In the first practice session of Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Antonelli replaced George Russell. Less than two circuits and ten minutes passed during his maiden debut at the Parabolica because he lost control of his Mercedes

Team principal Toto Wolff affirmed Antonelli's elevation as a junior driver with the team and said the incident would not affect his chances of winning an F1 race. Alongside George, Antonelli expressed his pleasure over being named a Mercedes works driver and thanked the team for their belief in him and support. Though he is still learning, he believes he is prepared for the chance.

Giannis Antonelli, an Italian Formula One driver, became a colleague of the Monza squad after making a strong F2 debut. With little time on the circuit, two-time Karting and Formula 4 winner Antonelli crashed after gaining too much speed into the last corner of his second lap.

George Hamilton, another rookie, left for Ferrari at the end of the season, and he is taking his place. Monza's new squad demonstrates their faith in indigenous talent and the excellence of their youth program. Wolff, the team manager of Monza, stated, "Kimi has consistently shown the talent and speed needed to compete at the very top of our sport."

The team is thrilled about the possibility of having its first Italian driver in Formula One for three years. Italy hasn't had a Formula One victory since 2006, and it took considerably longer for the country to win the championship—Alberto Ascari was the last Italian champion in 1953.
