2 Rice University Students Found Dead Dorm Room in Possible Murder-Suicide
The president of Rice University in Houston announced on Monday that two individuals had been found shot dead in what seemed to be a murder-suicide in a dorm room.
Reginald DesRoches, the president of the university, stated at a press conference that one of them was a female student who had resided in the dorm room at the Jones College residential hall. According to him, the other man was a non-student at the institution and had shot himself.
The student's identity was confirmed by the institution as junior Andrea Rodriguez Avila.
According to Chief of Police at the University of Clemente Rodriguez, she seemed to have been romantically involved with the man.
According to Mr. Rodriguez, the two were found on Monday afternoon as the Rice University police were conducting a welfare check. This came about after a family member complained that they couldn't get in touch with Ms. Avila. At the scene, both were declared deceased. He stated that it looked like Ms. Avila allowed the man to enter the apartment building.
The fatalities took place on the first day of instruction. Around 5:40 p.m., the university issued a shelter-in-place notice, asking all students to remain in their dormitories while the police conducted their investigation.
The warning was withdrawn prior to 7 p.m. For the remainder of Monday, all classes and events were canceled, the university said on Social Media.
